What You Can Look Forward To…
The Swartberg Mountain range is composed of two main mountain chains running roughly along the northern edge of the Little Karoo ( Klein Karoo). As most of the Swartberg Mountains are above 2000 m high, this makes it the tallest mountains in the Western Cape. This mountain range is also one of the longest with a span of 230km from Laingsburg to Uniondale, and 70km wide. The highest point to be the Seweweekspoortpiek at 2325 m (7,628ft). Scientists have calculated that the Swartberg was originally more than 7000m high, but erosion has worn it down to the current height.
Beautiful rock formations of Quartzitic sandstone gives the Swartberg mountains a scenic view which you will never forget. Much of the Swartberg is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site, with protected areas of Cape Floral. The Swartberg Pass will provide the finest views of the geology, flora and fauna.
The Swartberg Pass
The Swartberg Pass on the R328 run through the Swartberg mountain range (black mountain in English) which runs roughly east-west along the northern edge of the semi-arid area called the Little Karoo in the Western Cape, South Africa.
Calitzdorp: Quaint Capital of Port
The little town of Calitzdorp, situated on scenic Route 62, is world famous for port wines made in the classic tradition of a high alcohol and relatively low sugar content. The Red Wine and Muscadels produced in this small sleepy village town ranks amongst the best in South Africa.
Meiringspoort Pass
“Meiring’s pass” is a South African mountain pass on the N12 national road, where it crosses the Swartberg mountain range. The pass is a gateway that connects the Little Karoo and the Great Karoo, through a gorge with a 25 km road crossing the same river 25 times.
