the port capital of south africa

The little town of Calitzdorp, situated on scenic Route 62, is nestled in the heart of South Africa's smallest winemaking region - the Klein Karoo, whose plantings account for only 3% of total vineyards.  The Calitzdorp Wine Route has nevertheless carved a charming niche for itself as the Quaint Capital of Port.

Port cultivars such as Tinta Barocca and Touriga Nacional prefer a hot, dry, climate.  There are many similarities between the climate of Calitzdorp and the Douro valley in Portugal.  The poor, well-drained soils of Calitzdorp, where vines struggle to ripen, are eminently suited to port production.

Our port wines are a blend of internationally recognised varieties to enhance aroma intensity, depth and complexity.  They are made in the classic tradition of a high alcohol and relatively low sugar content.  We also produce very interesting quality red wines from Portuguese varieties (e.g. Touriga Nacional).  The reds are full bodied with a deep red colour.  Calitzdorp is also very well known for its excellent value Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tinta Barocca (with earthy, berry, chocolate flavours), Merlot, Shiraz, as well as some of the best Muscadels in the country.
